Canberra has been responsible for producing some of the most ground breaking heavy music in Australia. Armoured Angel thundered through the musical landscape and in turn inspired other locals in a myriad of styles, from Alchemist's psychedelic thunder through to Psychrist's unrelenting death assault.
One band emerged through the early nineties with a slightly greener influence and began to merge Sabbath laced riffage with Sleep inspired bottom end groove. After recording a self titled EP in 95 the band went through a tumultuous period leaving only vocalist Brad Nicholson to reform the band into today's line up. This line up is now riding the crest of the doom-metal wave that is sweeping through underground scenes worldwide. This band is Pod People.
Pod People solidified their line up in late 95 with guitarist Mel Walker joining other new recruits Maggs (drums), Josh (guitar) and Dave (bass). They began writing and performing a much heavier darker brand of music than the previous line up. 1998's 'Swingin' Beef' sowed the seeds of the doomy groovy rock that was to galvanise the groups reputation as one of the countries leading lights in bong hit heights. They have strung a succession of high profile supports culminating in the groups first of seven successive appearances at the countries highest profile extreme music day 'Metal For The Brain'.
The 'Soil' EP in 2000 further displayed the evolution of the bands sound before they signed with the Highbeam Records label in 2001 and released their debut album "Doom Saloon" on an unsuspecting nation and proceeded to lay waste to music festivals all over the nation. A number of high profile international supports would also lead to the ultimate measurement of the bands quality. Following two supports on successive tours by doom lords Cathedral, the band sent Doom Saloon to Lee Dorian and the album was secured for an international licence on doom uber-label Rise Above Records in the UK.
The album received extremely positive reviews worldwide and a film clip for the opening track "Filling The Void" was added to high rotation on Australian domestic music TV.
In 2005 the band frustrated by the lack of doom acts coming out to Australia bit the bullet and promoted Electric Wizard's first Australian national tour, doing a thorough tour of the east coast of Australia, selling out back to back shows in Melbourne and an unforgetable gig on a boat on Sydney harbour that instantly passed into doom folklore.
The band are about to unleash their second full length album in 2006 and build upon a granite foundation of riffage that will appeal to all fans of heavy traditional doom. Stay tuned...
